Sometimes a senior has a fall or another medical emergency that precipitates the need for a change in their living circumstances such as a move into an assisted living community. Other times, the situation is not so clear-cut and is more a case of a senior slowly losing the ability to attend to their daily care needs. We know it is upsetting for families to see their loved one decline, which is why experts offer advice to help determine if an assisted living setting would be an improvement in their lifestyle.

One way to decide if assisted living is right for your parent or another loved one is to take an inventory of what they are having trouble doing for themselves and if assistance would improve their quality of life. For instance, are they having a hard time preparing and cooking meals or need help bathing, toileting, and dressing? Have they stopped driving and spent a lot of time alone? Is your normally tidy parent now letting the household tasks go and/or mail is stacking up unopened and bills not getting paid?

Other factors that indicate the need for more help includes recent falls or burns from using water that is too hot or from cooking. Warning signs also include a history of medication mismanagement or worsening chronic health problems, which could all benefit from the care received in an assisted living community.

For trusted assisted living Fort Collins seniors can count on, we encourage you to consider MorningStar. MorningStar of Fort Collins offers stylish assisted living suites with a choice of spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans. We make it easy for retirement years to be carefree with a full range of amenities, care services, wellness programs and activities. In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood provides specialized care to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003. We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Contact us to learn more about the finest memory care and assisted living Fort Collins offers.

Dizziness in Seniors is a Common Complaint

If you are a senior who is having episodes of dizziness, you are not alone as it is one of the most common complaints of older adults. Studies show up to 25% of Americans 72 years and older have reported dizziness; and a Swedish study found up to 50% of adults 85 years and older had dizzy spells. It is important to consult with your medical provider as there are various reasons for dizziness and it puts older people at a significantly higher risk of falling. In fact falls are the number one cause of hospital admissions and accidental deaths in the elderly.

Dizziness in seniors is most commonly caused by benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). The condition is a result of calcium carbonate crystals in the otolithic organs of the inner ear getting dislodged from the gelatinous membrane that normally holds them in place. As these crystals become free-floating, they activate the hair cells in the semicircular canal, causing brief but disturbing episodes of vertigo.

Experts say the second most common cause of dizziness in the elderly is a progressive degeneration of the spine, particularly the cervical spine or neck. Due to natural aging or the result of arthritis, a person’s neck may not move as easily and can send error messages to the brain regarding the position of the head. “When there is a sensory mismatch between what your neck sensors are saying and what your vision and vestibular system are saying, the consequence is dizziness symptoms, in particular, imbalance that can lead to falling.”

Other causes of dizziness in the elderly are anxiety and mental disorders as well as medications such as ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, and calcium-channel blockers. A visit to your healthcare provider can help figure out what is causing you dizzy spells.

At MorningStar of Billings, the wellbeing and comfort of residents is our highest priority and we offer unsurpassed independent living and assisted living. For seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases, our Reflections Neighborhood’s memory care is staffed by a team of compassionate dementia care specialists. Stretching a Few Times a Week can Improve Mobility

For many years, people thought stretching exercises were done mainly to help athletes avoid injuries. Research now shows the value of stretching for older adults. The Harvard School of Medicine’s journal reports that doing “simple stretches just two or three times a week can dramatically help anyone increase flexibility, improve balance, and relieve the pain caused by muscle and joint stiffness.”

Improving balance and increasing flexibility helps seniors retain the ability to do the things they need to do for their independence. If you are unable to get up from a chair or out of bed each morning, you will need assistance. Studies show stretching can also improve circulation, muscle control and coordination. In fact the Journal of Gerontology recently reported on the results of a 12-month stretch and flex program for older adults, which found participants demonstrated positive changes in areas like physical fitness, self-efficacy, perceived functioning, and well-being. They also reported a decrease in pain.

It is important to talk to your doctor before you begin any new exercises including stretching. Once you get the go-ahead, experts say stretch at least 10 minutes twice a week; and do it after a five or ten minute walk or jog to warm up your muscles if possible. They say to take a deep breath, and to slowly exhale while holding the stretch for 30 seconds. Be sure not to stretch too far as to cause pain. For recommended stretches for seniors, check with your physical therapist or physician, or visit the National Institutes of Health (NIH) website.

*Before beginning any new exercise, please consult with your healthcare provider.

At the MorningStar of Billings senior living community, we offer independent living, assisted living and memory care. Our community provides residents with tasty, nutritional meals as well as suitable exercise programs and activities to help stay fit physically, mentally, socially and spiritually. Communication is Key to a Better Doctor / Patient Relationship

Surveys have shown over and over again that people feel better about their doctor when they are feel they are really listened to. While it may be easy to blame your doctor for the lack of communication, experts suggest very often both parties are at fault. Doctors are under pressure to keep a tight schedule and patients come in unprepared to get answers to their questions.

The following suggestion can show you how to do your part as a patient to use the valuable time you have with your doctor better. First, take notes in between visits as things come up, and right before your appointment, go over your notes. Write down the most important issues you wish to discuss with the doctor. Try and keep it to two or three as there is not time to discuss much more (if you need, set up another appointment).

From the moment the doctor walks into the room, let them know you have a couple of things you wish to discuss. If your visit includes talking about treatment plans, ask questions about the risks involved and/or options available. Remember no question is too stupid, and if you and the doctor agree on a plan, make sure you understand it. At the end of the appointment, repeat back your understanding of what was decided during the visit. Before you leave the office, get a printed copy of any prescriptions and referrals.

The MorningStar of Billings senior living community has 32 free-standing cottages and 72 bright suites for independent living; 70 suites for assisted living; and 36 secure suites for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory impairments. We are proud to offer our residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community through a wide range of care services, amenities and enrichment programs.

Using Heat or Ice to Lessen Pain & Inflammation

If you are like many of us, you may be confused whether you should use heat or cold to treat pain and/or inflammation. Medical experts explain that heat “boosts the flow of blood and nutrients to an area of the body,” and that “cold slows blood flow, reducing swelling and pain.” Thus heat is best for morning stiffness or to warm up muscles before excise. Cold can be used for short-term pain such as a sprain or strain. If you suffer from common ailments such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, back pain, fibromyalgia, or neck pain, doctors say you can treat it with either heat or cold.

Short-term relief can include the use of a gel pack either microwaved or frozen, a heating pad, or something as simple as a bag of frozen vegetable. You can also use a wash cloth held under hot or cold water and wrung out.

Doctors say whether you use heat or cold be sure to wrap a towel around the item to protect your skin. Apply it to the painful area for 15-20 minutes several times each day; however, be sure to let your skin return to its normal color and temperature before applying more heat or ice.

A warm shower or a soak in a warm tub is a good way to ease pain and loosen up muscles and joints; however, if you have heart problems and are over 70, please check with your doctor on whether it is safe for you. After exercise, soothe anyway aches and stiffness with a cool shower.

If you wake up each morning with pain and stiffness, try giving your clothes a few spins in the dryer and putting them on while they are still warm. Another idea is to use a melted paraffin and mineral oil wrap, which is available at most drugstores. Following the instructions, safely melt the mixture and dip the affected body part into the solution several times. Do not try this on skin with cuts or sores.

At MorningStar of Billings, we offer area seniors trusted independent living, assisted living and memory care. Our wide range of services and amenities include among other things a fitness room and a spa bath. While situated in a residential neighborhood that offers spectacular views of the Rockies, our spacious campus is convenient to shopping, medical facilities, restaurants and more. Many Seniors Suffer from Chronic Foot Pain

As we age, many seniors suffer from chronic foot pain that includes stress fractures, tendonitis, fat pad atrophy, plantar fasciitis, acute and chronic osteoarthritis and more. Sometimes the problem can be the result of old injuries, or in the case of women, wearing high heels or shoes with too small of a toe box. Other foot problems may be caused by systematic diseases like diabetes, lupus, gout, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Stress fractures are more commonly found in post-menopausal women with osteoporosis but men can also suffer from them. If you are at risk, experts recommend strengthening your bones by exercising, and if you are overweight, by dieting. They also say to talk to your doctor to ask if you should be on a medication.

While osteoarthritis (OA) is caused by the mechanical wear and tear on joints and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that attacks the joints, both can cause tenderness, pain, or stiffness and swelling in the feet, and make mobility more difficult. Sometimes RA even causes alignment changes that result in foot deformities.

Another common problem especially for seniors is fat pad atrophy. Even if you have put on a few extra pounds with age, the one place you do not want to lose fat or a cushioned padding is on the bottom of your feet. Fat pad atrophy causes pain in the ball of your foot and heel and can be eased by extra cushioning or custom-made foam shoe inserts. In the most extreme cases, filler injections are used to replace the fat pad.

Also the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons report that approximately 2 million patients each year are treated for plantar fasciitis that occurs when the strong band of tissue that supports the arch of your foot becomes irritated and inflamed. Plantar fasciitis is typically the result of repetitive stain to the ligament of the sole of the foot and is caused by walking, running, jumping, or poor footwear. Treatments include icing to reduce pain and inflammation, stretching exercises, and shoe inserts.

At MorningStar at Arrowhead, We Offer a True Home

The MorningStar story began with a vision from our Founder/CEO, Ken Jaeger, who wanted to re-create senior housing that was defined by the human touch and felt much like his grandmother’s house – “a place where one can go and feel a sense of family.”   Out of this loving concept that focuses on the power of relationships, came three mission statements upon which MorningStar was founded: Honor God in our business practices and relationships; Value all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals;  and Invest generously in our team’s ability to serve well.

Following these precepts, MorningStar at Arrowhead is committed to providing residents with a lifestyle of comfort and wellness with a care team that feels honored to serve seniors.  Our beautiful community offers a choice of 60 well-appointed, private assisted living suites in a variety of floorplans.  In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood has 25 secure suites devoted to the specialized care of residents with memory impairment.

While the country slowly gets back to normal and continues to reopen, we want you to know that MorningStar at Arrowhead will still be closely following—in many cases, exceeding—guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), American Senior Housing Association and Federal government.  This includes prohibiting non-essential visitors and vendors from entering our community. Also all team members who interact with residents must follow strict protocols regarding hygiene and protection, and we will continue the daily screening of staff for symptoms and prevent those who are ill from coming to work.

Currently we are safely accepting new residents; however it is being done in conjunction with a thorough screening process.  New residents move directly into their private suite, where they will remain for a 14-day quarantine period; and staff entering the room will wear full personal protective equipment.

Remember our first commitment is to the safety of all those in our care.  Listen to what one resident’s daughter writes about her experience, “Although it is difficult not being able to visit our loved ones, I am so grateful for the proactive stand you are taking. Our parents could not be in a better place.”

If you are looking for outstanding senior living, Glendale AZ’s MorningStar at Arrowhead encourages you to contact us or visit our website for more information about our loving home.

Would You Like a Cup of Tea?

Researchers say that something as simple as a cup of tea each day may help put you at a lower risk for cognitive decline.  We have known for a while that green tea, black tea and oolong tea, which all have high amounts of antioxidants, are associated with a lower risk of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.  Now a study published in The Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging, reports that tea, and especially green tea, may benefit our brain with a better working memory.

When compared to adults who rarely drank tea, individuals who drank tea on a regular basis had a 50 percent lower risk of cognitive decline.  Moreover researchers say drinking tea even provided some level of protection for those who have the APOE e4 gene, which is associated with an increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease, by having an 86 percent lower risk of cognitive decline.

The study, led by Feng Lei from the Department of Psychological Medicine at the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, explained that, “Tea is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world. The data from our study suggests that a simple and inexpensive lifestyle measure such as daily tea drinking can reduce a person’s risk of developing neurocognitive disorders in late life.”

Legal and Care Planning is Important for Everyone

Especially if you are an older adult, you should have a will or trust drawn up as well as a power-of-attorney and an advanced directive.   The difference between a will and a trust is a will is a legal document that goes into effect after the person dies while a trust goes into effect as soon as it is created.  The trustor (the creator of that trust) can name others to be in charge of the trust when she or he becomes incapacitated or dies.

A living will, also known as a Health Care Directive, is a legal document in which a person specifies what actions should be taken for their health care if they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves because of illness or incapacity.  The person named as the health care authority has the power to make medical decisions and sees to it that the wishes of the person is carried out.

Another legal document many seniors find is a good idea to have is a Durable Power Of Attorney (DPOA).  The document is used if the person (the principal) ever becomes mentally incapacitated and covers both financial and medical decisions.   The attorney-in-fact or agent in effect becomes a legal guardian for the disabled principal.

These types of documents should be drawn up before a person becomes incapacitated.  If someone has a diminished capacity due to Alzheimer’s disease or another medical condition and needs someone to handle their medical and financial decisions, a person can pursue a legal Guardianship status for them.  Legal guardianship is granted by the courts and typically continues throughout the remainder of the person’s life.  Please refer to your financial consultant or attorney for more information.

MorningStar at Bear Creek provides loving, compassionate assisted living for dementia patients.  Our community is designed to care for those in the early-stage of Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia right through to the most advanced stages. Please visit our website for pricing and availability.

MorningStar of Fort Collins is Staying Strong

Picture
Despite the coronavirus outbreak throughout the country and the world, MorningStar of Fort Collins residents and team members are staying strong. While we have temporarily closed our community to all non-essential visitors and vendors for the safety of all inside our home, we are cheered by the incredibly encouraging support from residents’ families and our surrounding community.  Each homemade poster held up to the window, every thoughtful email sent in the wee hours, and calls of faith and courage do much to sustain us in the fight against COVID-19 and help keep up the spirits of residents and team members alike.

We have no higher responsibility than that of the Safety and Security of our residents, families and team members, and have implemented protocols and procedures following guidelines –and in some cases exceeding them- from the CDC, American Senior Housing Association and Federal government.  This includes checking staff temperatures at the start and the close of their shift, having unwell team members stay home, and conducting mandatory training for all team members on infection control with a heightened emphasis on hand sanitation.

In terms of community cleaning, we have ordered extra inventory of disinfectant and related cleaning supplies.  In addition, for the time being, we have eliminated communal dining and assisted living residents receive meals in their suite (there are a few exceptions) and memory care residents eat as usual but spaced apart from one another.

The MorningStar of Fort Collins team understands the worry of our residents and their families, which is why we send regular updates whenever new developments or protocols dictate.  Currently we are safely accepting new residents and are confident in our COVID-19 protocols to keep all those beneath our roof safe.  Our community offers 55 suites for assisted living care and 24 secure suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

MorningStar at Bear Creek Offers Dementia Care that Embraces Hope

Caring for a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia at home can be a difficult job.  Moreover for some caregivers whose own health is less than perfect, the stress and worry of providing care for a loved one with dementia can be too much.

At MorningStar at Bear Creek, our community is dedicated to caring for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Staffed by compassionate, dementia care specialists, the entire building is designed to accommodate the needs of our tender residents.  Furthermore, we are equipped to care for seniors from the onset of the disease right through to the most advance stages.

Our loving team takes a holistic approach to dementia care that is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky,” and is how we thoughtfully enter, embrace and explore the very different and isolating world of dementia.  To fully support residents, we intentionally enter into the “purple world” of dementia and lovingly cross over the physical and emotional boundaries that would otherwise separate us.

The families of MorningStar at Bear Creek’s residents feel comforted knowing that every aspect of our community delivers focused care including mealtimes intended to stimulate the often-flagging appetites of residents.  In addition, we leverage the power of music, dance, art, aromatherapy, and animals to heal and comfort as well as take into account the uniqueness of each person.  And most importantly, we embrace hope.

MorningStar at Bear Creek is safely accepting new residents and we are very confident in our enhanced protocols for dealing with COVID-19.  To ensure the safety of residents and team members alike, we have temporarily suspended non-essential visitors and vendors from entering our communities, ramped up our cleaning and disinfecting procedures, and more.  Please visit our website or give us a call for additional information on the most trusted dementia care in Colorado Springs as well as for information about our COVID-19 protocols.

MorningStar at Bear Creek embodies the very best in senior living with a distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest” that sets us apart from other senior living communities.  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing seniors and investing in a staff with a felt calling to serve, we offer loving, compassionate care within a beautiful home-like setting.  Please contact us to learn more about our unique approach to dementia care.
