Learn More About the MorningStar Foundation

MorningStar of Fort Collins is part of the MorningStar Senior Living Company, whose mission is to “cast a new light on senior living.” We start by creating a true home for the residents in our communities, made possible by a dedicated team who understands the highest expression of living is to share their gifts and talents, time and energy with others.

The scope of our Vision to love and honor also includes impacting the world for good through the MorningStar Foundation, and offering support to philanthropic initiatives within our local neighborhoods and around the world. We also are proud to support Lifewater, whose Healthy Village strategy focuses not just on their delivery of a safe water point, but on the villagers’ monitored adoption of hygiene habits in each and every home.

Closer to home, MorningStar’s senior living communities are great supporters of the Alzheimer’s Association. We participate in events throughout the year including the “Longest Day Celebration” (summer solstice), which will be on June 21st this year. Our uplifting celebrations include hosting fundraisers of every sort, balloon releases, games, food and more. Additionally, our communities participate in the “Walk to End Alzheimer's,” either by walking, sponsoring or hosting other creative ways to raise funds. Other efforts include doing our share by volunteering with local nonprofits to help where there is a need.

MorningStar of Fort Collins’ goal is to be one of the best senior communities in the area, and we are committed to the comfort, wellbeing, and safety of our remarkable residents.  Located on the southeast side of the city, we are convenient to medical facilities, shopping, and other services.  Our community offers 55 stylish assisted living suites and 24 suites devoted to the individualized care of those with memory impairment.  We also offer short-term stays to see if we are a good fit as well as respite care. It’s Common for Those Living With Dementia to Wander

The Alzheimer’s Association says that six in 10 people with dementia will wander. The danger with this is someone with Alzheimer’s disease may not remember their name, their address or how to get home. Furthermore, the more agitated the person becomes when they feel lost and disorientated, the less able they may be to tell someone something that could help get them safely back home.

Experts say anyone suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia that is mobile is at risk for wandering. Even if the person is in the early stages of the disease, they may still get disorientated; but thankfully there are strategies to help keep your loved one safe.

It is important to have a plan in place in the event that it should happen to your parents or another loved one. Find out if your area has a “Safe Return Program” and enroll them in it and have them wear a GPS locating device at all times. Also, learn to recognize the warning signs of potential wandering such as: has the person forgotten how to get to familiar places, talks about going home even when they are home, gets confused as to where familiar places in the home are, and acts nervous or anxious in crowded areas.

Tips to help prevent wandering include creating and sticking to a routine, identifying the times when wandering is most likely to occur, and trying to make sure all of the person’s needs are met so they don’t feel the need to go out. In addition, reposition door locks out of the line of sight and make sure car keys are not left out. You can buy a device that sounds an alarm when a door or window is opened; and never leave the person locked in at home or in a car alone.

Along with assisted living, Fort Collins, CO’s MorningStar community offers memory care in a secure environment that allows residents to safely explore their surroundings, including an enclosed patio and courtyard. In addition, our dedicated staff is trained to keep residents engaged and safe. Helping a Loved One Decorate Their Assisted Living Suite

We all know that life changes can be fraught with anxiety and fear and moving into assisted living is certainly a major change for many seniors.  However, experts say there are several things families can do to help ease the transition period.

One of those things is to help your loved one make a comfortable home in their new suite.  Julia Bailey, a senior associate and interior design project manager with Denver-based OZ Architecture, explains that, "Moving into assisted living often can feel like a loss of independence and privacy for your loved one, but thoughtful interior design can go a long way toward improving happiness and well-being for the resident, as well as improving overall functionality of the new living space."

Ms. Bailey cautions that you need to remember to let your loved one have a say in how their new home will be decorated, including the personal mementos and photos they want to bring with them and which ones they want to display.  Triggering happy memories with sentimental items is a big step toward making their new place a real home.  Also, accent pillows and pictures are an easy way to add a lot of color and attractiveness to their place.

Please keep in mind safety concerns when placing furniture and avoid using area rugs that can become trip hazards or overcrowding a room and not leaving enough space to easily navigate.  Install handrails where needed and make sure there is easily accessible lighting in the bathrooms and hallways if the person is getting up at night.

Helping your loved stay organized can improve the home’s safety as well as the aesthetic.  Consider any mobility issues the person may have and make sure frequently used items are within easy reach on a shelf.  Chairs and sofas should be firm and stable.

MorningStar of Fort Collins offers residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  The stylish floor plans of our spacious suites are well-appointed and all that is missing are your own furnishings and personal items.  Also, you will not need to leave behind your furry friend as we are pet friendly. For exceptional assisted living, Fort Collins seniors are encouraged to consider MorningStar, a great place to call home!

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Find These Healthy Food Options for Seniors at MorningStar Senior Living

When it comes to senior care, nutrition is one of the most important factors for maintaining good health and well-being in senior living. At MorningStar Senior Living of Arrowhead, we understand the importance of a healthy diet for our residents in our senior living communities in Glendale Az, which is why we prioritize offering exciting and fun meals that incorporate whole fruits and vegetables. Our chefs at MorningStar senior living communities use fresh, locally sourced produce whenever possible to ensure our residents receive the highest quality food. We also offer a wide range of menu options to accommodate various dietary needs and preferences, including vegetarian and gluten-free options.

Eating whole fruits and vegetables is essential for maintaining good health, especially for seniors. These foods are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that the body needs to function properly. They can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Additionally, they can help seniors maintain a healthy weight, reduce inflammation, and improve brain function. By prioritizing whole fruits and vegetables in our meal plans at MorningStar of Arrowhead, we ensure that our residents receive the essential nutrients they need to stay healthy and happy.

Another great benefit of eating whole fruits and vegetables is that they can help boost the immune system. As we age, the immune system naturally weakens, this makes seniors more susceptible to illness and disease. By consuming a diet rich in whole fruits and vegetables, seniors can give their immune system the boost it needs to fight off infections and other health problems. This is especially important in a senior living community like MorningStar of Arrowhead, where seniors are close to one another and may be more susceptible to illness.

Encouraging the consumption of whole fruits and vegetables in senior living communities should be part of a comprehensive approach to senior care. This is why at MorningStar senior living homes in Glendale, Az, our team of caregivers is trained in all aspects of senior care, including nutrition. Our caregivers work closely with each resident to develop a personalized care plan that meets their unique needs and preferences. Whether it’s providing assistance with meal planning and preparation or ensuring that residents receive the right supplements and medications, our care team is always there for residents when they need them most.

Proper skin care and health education are important aspects of senior care, which is why it's necessary for MorningStar of Arrowhead to offer the very best health care for seniors living in Glendale Az.

Another important benefit of senior skin care is that it can help prevent skin cancer. Our skin is naturally susceptible to skin cancer, but as we age it becomes more important to have regular skin checks to detect any potential problems. By providing seniors with regular skin care, including regular skin exams, MorningStar Senior Living in Glendale Az can detect and treat any skin issues early on, reducing the risk of skin cancer and ensuring that seniors enjoy good health for as long as possible.

At MorningStar of Arrowhead, we understand the importance of senior skin care, and we make it a priority for all of our residents. A Healthy Diet May Lower Your Risk for Alzheimer's Disease

The Medical News Today says dementia is one of the leading causes of disability and death worldwide. The debilitating disease has no cure; and available treatments only alleviate symptoms without slowing the progression of the disease. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dementia affects more than 55 million people globally, and 10 million people receive a diagnosis each year. Of that number it is estimated 60 – 70 percent have Alzheimer’s disease, and 6 million of them are Americans. Unfortunately those numbers are expected to rise to 139 million people across the globe by 2050.

Other rising numbers are in cases of diabetes, obesity, and heart disease, which are all believed to increase a person’s risk for dementia. This is why researchers are not only trying to find a cure for Alzheimer’s and other dementias but ways to reduce people’s risk for the disease.

Dr. Christopher Weber, director of global science initiatives at the Alzheimer’s Association, noted that: “Research looking at the relationship between diet and cognition is well-established. There is strong evidence to suggest that what is good for the heart is good for the head, and we know a healthy diet is good for the heart.”

Researchers say one diet that appears to suggest better cognitive health is the MIND diet, (Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay). It is similar to the Mediterranean diet with a heavy focus on green, leafy vegetables, nuts, berries, bean, whole grains, seafood, poultry and wine.

On the other hand, foods high in refined carbohydrates may cause an increase in the risk for Alzheimer’s. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports on a study linking processed meat products, like sausages, salami, and bacon with a relative increased risk of all dementias by 44% and Alzheimer’s disease by 52%.

MorningStar at Bear Creek in Colorado Springs is entirely devoted to the comprehensive care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our holistic memory care assisted living is individualized for each resident and every aspect of our community is tailored to serve their needs.  As dementia care specialists, we provide support to our residents and their families with an array of services, wellness programs and activities for the best quality of life. Finding Care for a Loved One With Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s is one of those progressive diseases where needs continue to evolve and change, and it is important to address those changes with the appropriate care. The Alzheimer’s Association advises families that there is not a one-size-fits-all formula when it comes to Alzheimer's care; but rather to take a close look at your own unique family situation. They also say to recognize decisions regarding care are not easy.

Some of the options families may consider include in-home care, respite care, all-day adult centers, hospice care and long-term care. All these choices require time to explore to ensure they provide the level of care a loved one needs. Experts recommend trying to include the person with Alzheimer’s into the decision making process as much as possible.

The Alzheimer’s Association says often a person in the early stages of the disease can live alone but in the middle stages typically 24/7 care is needed. During the most advanced stages, intensive around-the-clock care is required. If it is time for long-term care, you will want the best care possible. Experts say look for a memory care community that treats the whole person and has an environment in which they can feel independent and safe.

A Place for Mom, an online senior living referral service, offers questions to help decide when it may be time for a family to consider long term-care in a memory community. Some of those questions include:

  • Is your loved one agitated or aggressive?

  • Is your aging relative withdrawn or nervous?

  • Are their hygiene needs met?

  • Does your loved one wander?

  • Are their living conditions safe?

  • Are their medications properly managed?

  • Is your loved one well-nourished?

  • Have you started to feel caregiver burnout?

  • Is caregiving affecting your health?

  • Are you and your family safe?

MorningStar at Bear Creek in Colorado Springs offers comprehensive assisted living dementia care which supports residents with services, wellness programs and activities essential to quality of life. MorningStar’s holistic approach is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky,” and uses Montessori-based therapy techniques. As dementia care specialists, we feel it is our privilege–our calling–to walk alongside residents and their families during this unexpected and challenging journey. Using the Internet for Medical Information

Let’s be honest, many of us rely on the Internet for medical advice. While it can supply good answers, doctors also caution you have to be careful what sites you trust. There are many websites providing good medical information but there are also sites with misleading or even dangerous advice.

Dr. Michael Langan, an internal medicine physician at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, cautions anyone with a blog can dispense information and advice; and a good way to avoid misinformation is to ask your doctor to recommend the sites they trust. Additionally, the National Institute on Aging recommends using health websites sponsored by Federal Government agencies. They say a good place for reliable, up-to-date information is the National Institutes of Health, but at the same time, remind everyone that the Internet is no substitute for seeing your doctor or other health professional who can give you advice that caters to your specific situation.

Other things to look for include name recognition such as the Mayo Clinic or the Cleveland Clinic. Moreover, remember sites that end in .gov, identity U.S. government agencies; .edu, educational institutions; and .org, usually designates nonprofit organizations (such as professional groups; scientific, medical, or research societies; and advocacy groups). A .com is a commercial site.

The NIH says to look for the date of the information (often can be found at the bottom of the page) and see if the authors and contributors are identified. If the author is listed, what is his/her background and what is their goal in writing the article or the intent of the organization it is written for. Is there any financial motive for the information? Check out the About Us or Contact Us pages as they provide background information about the organization.

The Connection Between Hearing Loss and Cognitive Impairment

JAMA Neurology added to the growing body of evidence showing a link between hearing loss and cognitive impairment. The study found treating hearing loss with hearing aids may reduce the risk of developing dementia by up to 19%. In fact, researchers say hearing loss may be the biggest treatable factor for dementia. An article in AARP explains what may cause the link between hearing loss and dementia.

The first theory regards socialization. Scientists say once a person starts having more difficulty being in a group of people and following the conversation, they may avoid such social gatherings. This in turn can lead to isolation, which in itself is problematic as less social engagement as well as less cognitively stimulating activities and depression are risk factors for dementia.

Secondly, coping with hearing loss means the person is constantly working to sort out sounds and make sense of what is being said. The brain now may have “fewer resources (brain power) to help preserve thinking and memory abilities.” Scientists also believe hearing loss causes the brain to be less stimulated with sound information, which is linked with parts of the brain shrinking and atrophying faster with the chronic deprivation.

While experts agree we still need more studies regarding the link between hearing loss and a higher risk for dementia, they do know that addressing a hearing issue with hearing aids is beneficial for the person’s overall quality of life. Moreover, there are no negative medical issues associated with the devices.

MorningStar at Bear Creek is designed to ensure the comfort, wellbeing and safety of residents suffering from memory loss such as Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.
