What Should You Look for When Touring a Senior Living Community?

If you are starting to search for senior living, it is recommended that you take a tour of the community.  While all the beautiful pictures online or in a brochure can make a community look great, firsthand impressions go a long way toward getting a real feel of the place.

Before your visit, make sure the senior living facilities you are interested in offer the options you want – independent living and/or assisted living.  If a family member needs memory care, is there a separate wing devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.

If you are looking for assisted living, please keep in mind it is important that you get it right the first time as it is hard on your loved one to get settled somewhere and then decide it is not a good fit.  During your tour, A Place for Mom, the largest assisted living referral service, recommends that you start evaluating the place from the moment you walk through the door.  Ask yourself, does it look clean and orderly as well as smell fresh?  Inquire about housekeeping services and how often private suites are cleaned, the costs involved, general maintenance of the community, and security.

If you can, come during an activity so you can join in the fun.  This will give you a good idea of the staff’s friendliness around the residents.  Also arrange to eat lunch at the place as it will not only provide you with a firsthand taste of the food but allow you to leisurely enjoy time with other residents.

At MorningStar of Billings, the wellbeing and comfort of our residents is our highest priority.  As one of the top-rated senior living facilities in Billings, we offer independent and assisted living.  In addition Reflections Neighborhood is our memory care facility and is staffed by compassionate, loving dementia care specialist.  Visit our website to conveniently schedule a tour or give us a call.  We look forward to meeting you and your family.

MorningStar Senior Living of Billings represents the finest in senior living with our unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing our seniors and hiring staff with a felt calling to serve in order to provide a true home for residents.  Please visit our website to set up a tour to see firsthand why we are one of Billings’ best senior living facilities.

Alzheimer’s Symptoms May be Reduced by Better Overall Health

As some of the more severe symptoms of Alzheimer’s are now associated to poor overall health, researchers stress the importance of maintaining healthy habits to help reduce symptoms of the disease.  They say that care should include getting the proper exercise, and eating a healthy diet as well as identifying and managing other medical conditions.

Studies show that “light exercise and walking appear to reduce wandering, aggression and agitation.”  Additionally getting the daily exercise appropriate to the person’s abilities also seems to help alleviate other problem behaviors.

A person’s hearing and vision should be regularly tested and the appropriate steps taken to deal with any problems found.  They should also be routinely seen by their primary care physician along with visits to specialists to address specific needs.

Eating problems are another common issue affecting those with Alzheimer’s and can put a person at risk for weight loss, dehydration and malnutrition.  For many the process of eating becomes more and more challenging, and they may no longer know how to use a fork or knife.  The progression of the disease can cause “nerve cell death that eventually steals the ability to recognize thirst or hunger.”

As one of the area’s foremost Alzheimer homes, MorningStar at Bear Creek is devoted to compassionate, professional memory care.  We understand that dining is as much about community as it is about nutrition, which is why our staff and residents eat together.  Also, out of respect for our residents’ sometimes compromised abilities at the table, we serve finger foods, texture-modified diets (mechanical soft and puréed, thickened liquids), and easy-to-recognize balanced meals that taste as good as they look.  Please visit our website to learn more about our beautiful, loving community that is a true home for our residents.

MorningStar at Bear Creek embodies the very best in Alzheimer homes with a distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest”.  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing seniors and investing in a staff with a felt calling to serve, we offer loving, compassionate care within a beautiful home-like setting.  Please set up a tour to see for yourself our exceptional community.

Does Your Parent Need Help with the Activities of Daily Living?

Often families are caught unaware when an aging parent has a fall or another event that immediately indicates they need more assistance in their daily life.  You many feel like a neglectful son or daughter for not noticing the changes happening before your eyes, but many seniors routinely deny they need help as they fear losing their independence.  However getting the proper care can actually help make them feel more independent as they know they can live their life without worry and help is available when they need it.

Experts cite several common signs that may indicate your parent needs more assistance including changes in the way they live.  For incidence if your mom was always a good housekeeper, and now her home is looking un-kept, or your dad who always took pride in his appearance, now looks as if he is not bathing regularly.  Signifcant weight loss may also mean a senior is not eating well and/or having trouble preparing meals.

Watch for signs your parent is having trouble walking or appears unsteady and is having difficulty getting up from a seated position.  Other changes are signs of confusion or uncertainty performing familiar tasks.  A dangerous side effect of poor memory can be seniors forgetting to take medications or not following their doctor’s care plan.  Errands can also be difficult to do as many seniors are uncomfortable driving and many stop driving altogether.

While assisted living was a relatively new concept when it first began in the early 1980s, today it is the fastest growing care option for seniors who are able to live independently but require a little assistance.  At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Arrowhead, we provide assistance with “activities of daily living” (ADLs) such as: bathing, dressing, eating, toileting and more.  Our beautiful community, located on the north side of Glendale AZ, offers 60 private assisted living suites and 25 suites in our Reflections Neighborhood devoted to the individualized care of those with memory impairment.

MorningStar at Arrowhead represents the best in assisted living with a unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest.” We have built our foundation on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve…all of which contributes to creating a true home for residents amid a beautiful, serene setting. The MorningStar Teams Support the Alzheimer’s Association

Every one of our new employees in our communities across 8 states are introduced to the precepts of Radiance, our proprietary program that guides the excellent service we are so proud of at MorningStar Senior Living.    In addition Radiance’s principles are reiterated and strengthened throughout the entire team during our daily Huddles.

As we seek people who have a felt calling to serve, our teams understands that life’s highest rewards come from serving others, which is why we also volunteer and serve several other non-profit organizations including the Alzheimer’s Association.  Every year our communities look forward to participating in sponsored events such as the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s.”   The 5K Walk is the world’s largest event and helps to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.  Along with many of MorningStar’s staff, we are joined by residents and family member as walkers, runners, exhibitors, and sponsors.  Each year we not only have fun with our planned activities but also raise much needed funds for such an important cause.  Last year the MorningStar cummunities collectively raised over $32,000 to the Association in search of a cure.

Another big event supporting the Alzheimer’s Association is our participation in the “Longest Day” celebration.  Held on on the summer solstice and the longest day of the year, our communities join thousands of people across the country to show their love and support of those affected by Alzheimer's disease. Past activities have included balloon releases and plantings, games, activities, special foods and movies.

Looking for Independent Living or Assisted Living?

Seniors often end up feeling confused about whether independent living or assisted living is their best senior living option.   Experts say the most important thing is to base your decision on is how well you manage your daily personal care activities on your own.

If you need help with things like meal preparations, personal hygiene, managing medications, and household chores, assisted living is probably your best bet.  However if you are an active senior who is handling these tasks on your own but would like convenient access to hospitality services such as dining, wellness programs and activities, housekeeping, and companionship, independent living is perfect for you.

Moreover for seniors who still feel comfortable managing their own personal care for now but worry things could change in the future, communities such as MorningStar of Billing are the answer.  Along with offering 32 free-standing cottages and 72 bright suites for independent living, we also have 70 suites for assisted living and 36 secure suites for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory impairments.  If down the road, you feel you need more assistance than our independent living offers, you will have first priority to one of our assisted living or memory care suites.

MorningStar of Billings is proud to be considered one of the top senior living facilities in the greater Billings’ area.  In addition our memory care facility is staffed by dementia care specialists who have a deep understanding of the disease.  Please visit our website for more information and to inquire about pricing and availability.  Also don’t forget to ask about our 2-year rate freeze (rent only) on an assisted living suite or a lifetime rate on memory care that includes both rent and care.

It’s Never Too Late for Seniors to Improve Their Health

It is more important than ever to take care of your health as Americans are living longer and we all want to ensure a healthier old age.  However even if you are already a senior, health care professionals say it is never too late to start improving your health.

Sian Robinson, a professor of nutritional epidemiology at the University of Southampton, recently authored a study on senior nutrition and states that, "Improving the quality of your diet can have a beneficial effect on health, whatever your age."  One recommendation is to eat more foods containing fiber.  Doctors report the addition of more fiber can positively impact your overall health by helping:  your colon work better and avoid constipation; reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and colon cancer; and lower your blood cholesterol level.

Another change that can improve your overall health as well as help to make you feel better and increase your level of energy is to add physical activity to your daily life.  This also can strengthen your bones and muscles, which in turn can help to prevent falls.  If you do fall, stronger bones are less likely to break.  Physical active has additionally been found to help your brain as studies show people who exercise regularly make better decisions.

It is also beneficial for seniors to keep their minds active. Like our muscles, our brains need to be exercised regularly to improve memory loss and cognitive skills.  Activities such as targeted brain exercises and playing word and trivia games can help.  Other habits that can enhance your health include not smoking, having regular checkups and learning how to prevent falls.

Learn More About Macular Degeneration

The National Eye Institute states that age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of visual loss in America.  According to their statics, close to 2.1 million people 50 years and older had macular degeneration in 2010.  That number is expected to more than double by 2050.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say approximately 6.5 percent of Americans age 40 and above have some degree of the disease.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) occurs most often after age 60 and causes loss in the center of the field of vision. The two types of macular degeneration include dry macular degeneration that causes the center of the retina to begin to deteriorate.  In wet macular degeneration, new blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak blood and fluid.  Unusually fuzzy or distorted vision is one symptom and the dry form (85 to 90 percent of AMD cases) is more common than the wet form.  Wet macular degeneration typically leads to more serious vision loss.

The degeneration of the macula affects our ability to read, recognize faces, drive, and many other visual tasks that requires us to see fine detail.  As the condition progresses, the areas of blurred vision may increase and blank spots may appear.

The good news is that patients with dry AMD are less likely to go blind than in the past with today’s treatment options that include a specific combination of high-dose vitamins and minerals.  Dr. Peter Campbell, a retina specialist, says that “Prompt recognition of macular degeneration is important to avoid it advancing to the point where failing central vision means people can no longer recognize faces.”  The most important advice he gives is for people over 60 to get regular eye exams.  Risks for the disease include age, smoking and family history.

At MorningStar at Bear Creek, we are dedicated to providing one of the best Alzheimer homes in the area.  Our community has 48 suites for the individualized care of those suffering from dementia, and in addition, we are a resource for families in the Colorado Springs area dealing with Alzheimer’s.  At Bear Creek, we lovingly care for seniors from the onset of the disease right through to the most advanced stages.

Now that the Cold Weather is Here, Remember to Stay Warm!

Many seniors are especially susceptible to the cold and end up feeling chilly all winter long.  There are several reasons why cold weather can be hard on the elderly including complications from common diseases and health conditions.

The American Heart Association explains that seniors with cardiovascular conditions can experience increased side effects from the cold as lower temperatures and cold winds reduce body heat and cause blood vessels to constrict.  This makes it more difficult for oxygen to reach the entire body, and someone with heart disease can have difficulty breathing.  Other health conditions common to the elderly include hypothyroidism (a low thyroid gland output), which can cause the sensation of cold feet and hands.  Also a sedentary lifestyle, problems with circulation from diabetes, and losing weight can cause seniors to be more affected by the cold.

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) cautions that if an elderly person becomes very chilled, it can be dangerous and result in a condition known as hypothermia and may happen before a person is aware of the problem.  Even residing in a very cold house may result in a body temperature of 95°F or lower, which “can cause many health problems, such as a heart attack, kidney problems, liver damage, or worse.”

Tips to help the elderly stay warm and regulate their body temperatures include eating a nutrient-rich diet and participating in age-appropriate exercises.  The NIA advises seniors not to try and save money by skimping on heating their homes but to keep the temperature at least 68–70°F.  To cut heating costs, close off unused rooms, shuts blinds and make sure your house if well-insulated.  Also wear layers throughout the day and use a small throw to place over your legs or shoulders if you do feel a chill.  Furthermore at night, wear long underwear under your pajamas and socks as well as a knit cap if you are still cold.

At MorningStar of Billings, we specialize in providing seniors with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  Along with the area’s best independent living and assisted living, we are a highly-respected memory care facility.  Please visit our website to learn more.

Study Shows New Hope in the Fight Against Alzheimer’s Disease

Although it is estimated that over 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and that the number will triple in the coming decades, experts are giving us some reason to hope.  Recently reported results from a large study show that while cases of Alzheimer’s are still increasing at an all-time rate, the increase appears to be slowing.

The new research suggests “higher levels of education and heart-healthy lifestyle measures may be helping to perhaps prevent, or at least delay, the onset of dementia.”  So as researchers race to find a cure for Alzheimer’s, the study is another indication that people can make specific changes in their lifestyle to help delay the onset of Alzheimer’s.

Published in The New England Journal of Medicine, the findings are part of the Framingham Heart Study and included 5,200 participants.  One of the study’s authors, Dr. Sudha Seshadri, a professor of neurology at Boston University School of Medicine, says she hopes effective preventive measures will lessen the estimated increase in the number of people affected with the disease in the coming decades.

This study provides the best evidence to date to suggest better education and improvements in heart health may be staving off dementia.  Researchers studied risk factors such as smoking, obesity, high blood pressure and levels of education and found the biggest declines were in those who took better control of their cardiovascular health.  Vascular dementia had the highest decline but researchers also saw declines in Alzheimer’s; however, they noted many people with Alzheimer’s also have signs of vascular dementia.

To summarize the study, researchers explain a healthier lifestyle appears to be an important part of Alzheimer’s prevention and includes eating well, challenging the brain, and participating in regular physical activity.  A healthier lifestyle also offers the benefit of increased energy levels and better thinking skills in old age.

Please visit MorningStar at Bear Creek’s website to learn more about our dedicated and compassionate assisted living for dementia residents.  We consider it an honor to walk alongside the memory-impaired (and their families) on this unexpected journey.
