Blood Pressure-Lowering Drugs May Lower Dementia Risk

Recently a large study out of Europe found a link between older adults who take blood pressure-lowering drugs and a lower risk of developing dementia.  Medical News Today explains that while researchers are still unclear as to what causes dementia, much work is being done to improve prevention strategies.  By studying “potential risk factors that may contribute to the development of this condition,” scientists say they hope to learn more about connections between certain health conditions and higher rates of dementia

Another study published last year in the journal, Neurology, found that patients with hypertension had a higher risk of experiencing brain lesions related to dementia.  In this newest study from the University of Leipzig in Germany, the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines in France, and the Frankfurt, Germany branch of IQVIA, researchers had access to a large database that collects and stores health information on millions of people.

Using the Disease Analyzer database, researchers looked at 12,405 people, aged 60 and older, with or without dementia.  They compared those who took antihypertensive drugs with those who had for periods of time or had never taken the drugs.  Results showed that those who took “certain antihypertensive drugs — including beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, and angiotensin II receptor blockers — seemed to have a lower risk of dementia.”

The study authors warn that antihypertensive drugs do not guarantee a person will not develop dementia.  They say rather it highlights the benefits of such drugs.

At MorningStar at Bear Creek, our loving assisted living for dementia residents includes comprehensive care services including 24-hour care managers, full time nurse, routine Health & Wellness Evaluations, and much more.  Every aspect of our dementia care addresses the needs of our residents starting with the very design of our community to a wide range of wellness programs, activities and healthy, delicious meals.  Please visit our website to learn more.

Studies Suggest Seniors Benefit from Life-long Learning

Several studies indicate life-long learning is good for seniors’ brain health and starting a new hobby or learning a skill late in life can help to boost a person’s memory.  In one study from the University of Texas at Dallas, researchers found that older adults “who took on a new mentally challenging hobby saw a lasting increase in their memory skills.”  They theorize that when seniors mentally challenge themselves with new skills such as playing an instrument, learning to operate a computer, or being taught to quilt, networks within the brain are being strengthened.

Neurologists in another study from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland discovered that a lifelong pursuit of mentally challenging activities may actually help prevent Alzheimer’s disease.  Their findings suggest that older adults “who frequently read, played mentally challenging games like chess, or engaged in other intellectually stimulating activities are 2.5 times less likely to have Alzheimer’s, which impacts approximately 4 million Americans.”

Other research out of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School appear to support these findings.  Their study relied on interviews as well as brain scans of participants, and findings indicate that seniors who have had a higher level of intellectual stimulation throughout the course of their lives, showed a marked delay in the onset of memory-related problems and other Alzheimer’s type symptoms.

At MorningStar, we believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless, and feel it is our privilege to provide seniors an environment where they can be productive and engaged each day.  Our Life Enrichment Team presents creative ways to stay active and enhance health and wellness, stimulate the brain and encourage connection.  Please visit our website to learn more about MorningStar at Arrowhead’s assisted living and memory care community.

The Best Memory Care in Colorado Springs Starts with a Compassionate Team

At MorningStar at Bear Creek, we proudly offer the Colorado Springs area individualized assisted living for dementia residents. While we offer all of the amenities, care services and wellness programs our residents need, the thing that sets us apart is our loving, professional team.  As dementia care experts, we feel it is our calling to care for our tender residents as well as offer support to their families

In order for us to deliver the Service Excellence our MorningStar brand demands, it requires a staff that has one thing in common – a big heart.  Our hiring process starts by looking for individuals with virtues that include kindness, character and selflessness.  We look for people who have a felt calling to serve, and feel like we do, that seniors are heroes and deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.

Upon hiring, each team member takes our Radiance training, which is much more than a customer service program but rather an altitude of the heart.  We use it to guide the way we deliver service - with depth of purpose and sincerity, and its percepts are reiterated each day during our daily Huddle.

Each team member also receives training in our Lavender Sky program that is designed to aid all of our employees, regardless of their positions, to better understand our dementia care residents.  It explains the disease and outlines our holistic approach to memory care that includes finding ways to connect with and nurture the essence of a person despite the extent of their memory loss.

If you are a family member searching for quality memory care for your loved one, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at Bear Creek.  Set within a gentle, loving environment, our care takes a resident-directed approach that utilizes multi-sensory cues to calm and to awaken memories, to support capabilities and, above all, to affirm dignity and value.  Please visit our website to learn more about our exceptional community.

MorningStar at Arrowhead’s Five Star Dining Experience

MorningStar at Arrowhead’s mission is to be one of the best retirement homes Peoria AZ offers, and we understand that “breaking bread together” provides more than just nutrients but also bonds us together as family and friends.  This is one of the reasons our community serves meals restaurant-style in our lovely dining room.

Meals at MorningStar are prepared largely from scratch by our Executive Chef and made from the freshest homegrown or locally sourced ingredients whenever possible.  Chef Steven also welcomes residents’ feedback and adapts recipes to make sure everyone enjoys our mealtimes.

In addition, we are committed to using BrainWise foods, which have been recognized as supporting brain health.  Super Foods include items such as blue and black berries and acai that contain anti-inflammatory properties and mega antioxidants.  Our delicious, nutrient-rich meals may include nuts and seeds, which are not only a great source of protein but are rich in omega-3 and Vitamin E, supplements known for fighting cognitive decline.

Other foods we serve are omega-3 rich fish and healthy, antioxidant treats made with dark chocolate.  We also offer a selection of sugar free, no sugar added, low sodium, vegetarian and low fat choices so our residents can self-manage their diets to meet any restrictions.

In our memory care wing, mealtime is a community gathering place and team members eat right alongside our residents, and family members are welcome to come and join us.  Furthermore, we recognize eating can be difficult for some individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia so we serve lots of finger foods as well as mechanically soft and puréed or thickened liquids.  Most importantly our easy-to-recognize balanced meals taste as good as they look.

Seniors and Strength Training

Health providers say that whether you or 18 or 80, it is important to do both cardiovascular exercises as well as strengthening exercises.   In addition to experiencing the benefits of better tone and shape, “research now links not just aerobic exercise but strength training with a reduced risk of death from all causes.”   Presently the American Heart Association and American College of Sports Medicine recommends doing strength training at least two times a week.

Many older adults do not think about strength training, and for those that are exercising, have limited their exercise to things like walking, swimming, jogging, or bike riding.  Dr. Jennifer Kraschnewski, an associate professor of medicine, pediatrics and public health sciences at the Penn State College of Medicine, explains we now have very good evidence that shows 80-year-olds are as able to improve their muscle mass as 50-year-olds.   She adds, “and this can be done reliably over a very short period of time – something as short as two to three months."

The large 2016 study found strengthening exercises helped to prevent age-related bone and muscle loss.  Led by Dr. Kraschnewski, the study drew on data from the National Health Interview Survey and followed 30,000 adults age 65 years and older for fifteen years.   While only 10 percent of the participants met the national guidelines for twice weekly strength training, those individuals had 46 percent lower odds of dying from any cause, or all-cause mortality.   Furthermore, they were less likely to die from cancer or cardiovascular disease.

Experts say you do not have to start lifting heavy weights as strength training includes using exercise bands, doing push-ups or yoga.  However be sure to check with your physician before you began any new exercise.

MorningStar of Billings offers plenty of ways our seniors can stay active with on an onsite pool, fitness room and lots of life enrichment activities.  Our beautiful community has senior independent and assisted living as well as memory care.  Please visit our website to learn more.

Before starting any exercise, be sure to consult with your health care provider

Our figure-eight floor plan allows residents to explore yet find their way back to an open, inviting area.

We recognize that the essence of the individual remains despite the extent of the memory loss, and that our job is to find ways to connect with and nurture it.  MorningStar’s philosophy and approach to this kind of supported living is encompassed under the breadth of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky.”  Thus, each day we strive to thoughtfully “enter, embrace and explore” the world of dementia.  All of our team members regardless of their position will receive training in Lavender Sky, which will give them an expanded set of tools to provide residents with extraordinary care.

When a memory care resident joins our community, we spend time with them and their family to learn as much as we can about their life before the memory loss including their talents, vocation, and preferences.  From there, we create a daily care plan based on their needs and designed to stimulate or calm in response to their mood or situation.  We know that whatever the form of dementia, a person’s essence remains and our calling is to find ways to connect with and nurture that essence.

MorningStar’s holistic approach to memory care incorporates some of the most respected research-based care programs available.  We provide an atmosphere of safety and well-being, while at the same time, encourage and support choice and independence whenever possible.  Our residents participate in daily recreational and purposeful activities that include life skills, art, music, and exercise.  They are also included in special events and scheduled outings.  Our comprehensive care also includes assisting families to better understand and cope with the disease.

Learn More About MorningStar of Billings’ Assisted Living

MorningStar of Billings offers a variety of senior living options including independent living, assisted living and memory care.  While memory care is all-inclusive, the cost of an assisted living suite is determined by the level of care the resident requires.

MorningStar’s assisted living has five levels and uses a simple point system, which factors into account the cost and time it takes to provide each service.  Whether it involves help with personal daily care activities such as grooming, bathing and toileting, or medical assistance, we come up with a cumulative score that places you within one of our five levels.

Before an assisted living resident even joins our community, our Wellness Director meets with them and their family to go over their medical history and discuss their needs.  From there, we create a care plan approved by the resident that ensures their comfort and safety.  In addition, we offer daily health monitoring and periodically review a resident’s care plan to make sure it is still up-to-date.

For assisted living and memory care, we provide dedicated 24-hour Care Managers, a CPR-trained staff member on every shift, and a full-time nurse onsite and on call 24-7.  We also have Certified Medication Care Managers, pharmacy services and much more.  For your safety, each room of our suites including the bathroom has an emergency call button.

Our community is located on the west end of Billings, and offers spectaculars views of the Rockies.  We enjoy a country setting in a beautiful, park like neighborhood near shopping and medical facilities.  Please visit our website to learn more.

Family Members Sing Our Praises

At MorningStar at Bear Creek, we feel privileged to serve those who are suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia and strive each day to find ways to elevate and celebrate their lives.  We accomplished this through the efforts of an extraordinary team of individuals with a felt calling to serve who are gratified to hear our residents’ families tell us how pleased they are to have their loved ones in our care.

As one family member of a former resident writes, “A family member was a resident of MorningStar Memory Care at Bear Creek before his recent death, and he was very happy there. As happy as he could be in his condition. He enjoyed the music, the bus rides, and other activities. He enjoyed being able to sit in the courtyard, and go where he wanted to within reason. There is a feeling of openness about the place, unlike so many other facilities where there is a small, ward-like atmosphere. I appreciate the very caring staff, the good food, and the way they were so kind and respectful to him.”

Another family member of a resident explains that she has been very satisfied with MorningStar at Bear Creek and so has her family member.  She goes on to say “The physical location is kept very clean, and the maintenance person always seems to be walking the area looking it over. The decor is nice, and the units are kept clean. The social activities programs are great. There are outings, and flower arranging classes, and music programs. The people who run the facility seem willing to make changes when that improves things for the residents.”

Another resident’s daughter wrote, “This facility is absolutely beautiful and well run. The management team works well together and supports one another for the good of everyone. The food is delicious and there is always something fun going on! My mom absolutely loves calling Bear Creek her home!”  She finishes by exclaiming, “This is definitely the best memory care facility in town!”

As one of the area’s premier dementia care communities, MorningStar at Bear Creek cares for seniors with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.  We have 48 suites that include a configuration of floor plans from studios to one- and two-bedroom apartments along with the amenities and services to assure your loved ones’ comfort, safety and wellbeing.

Moving to a Senior Living Community

At MorningStar at Arrowhead, we recognize for many seniors that change can be both difficult and challenging.  While moving to an assisted living community may be the best decision for the person and their family, this doesn’t mean there won’t be a transition period.

Many seniors mistakenly think touring senior living communities, deciding on one, figuring out budget considerations, and perhaps selling the family home is the most difficult part of moving to community living.  However, experts report it can typically take anywhere between 30 to 90 days before a senior feels comfortable in their new home, but there are few things that can be done to help the process go more smoothly.

To start with it is important to make sure your loved one’s new home is filled with familiar and beloved objects such as personal photos, books, and knick-knacks.  As the new resident, you should try to keep a positive attitude toward the move and be a good sport about joining community activities and socializing with others.  After all making new friends can make all the difference in the world.  Furthermore, remember the staff is there to help and will be more than glad to answer all of your questions.

As a family member, be open to listening to your loved one’s fears and concerns.  While you will want to visit, be sure not to be “too supportive” as the senior needs to find their own way in their new home.  Experts say it is also important to not waste time feeling guilty about moving your loved one into an assisted living.  Remember it is a safe place for them to find comfort, wellness and community.  Please visit MorningStar at Arrowhead to learn more about the area’s finest senior living.

Balance Exercises May Help Prevent Falls

It is important for older adults to take precautions to prevent fall as the resulting injuries tend to be more serious such as a broken hip or head trauma.  However doctors also point out that being sedentary is bad for our health regardless of how old we are and it is important to keep moving.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) reports that one out of every four Americans aged 65 and older falls every year but say there are things that seniors can do to help prevent a fall.  The trick is to find a way to safely move about while taking into account any balance issues you may experience.

As many adults are less active as they get older, it can exacerbate the physical effects of aging. Experts say, “Failure to engage in even mild exercise on a regular basis results in reduced muscle strength, decreased bone mass, loss of balance and coordination, and reduced flexibility.”  Other issues that can lead to falls include poor eyesight and taking medications with side-effects such as drowsiness, dizziness and low blood pressure.  Chronic health conditions including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and arthritis as well as problems with numbness in the feet can also increase the risk of falls.

The good news is there are a variety of easy-to-do balance-training exercises that can help seniors improve their balance. Even if you rely on a cane or other assistive devices, balance exercise can improve your mobility.  While many independent and assisted living communities such as MorningStar of Billings offer a variety of exercises which can help with balance, there are also exercises that can be done throughout the day right at home.  One example is to try standing on one foot while close to the kitchen counter.  If you need, keep your hand on the counter for support and as you feel more confident try taking your hand off.   Another thing you can do is to try and get up from a chair without using your arms.

MorningStar Senior Living of Billings represents the finest in senior living with our unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing our seniors and hiring staff with a felt calling to serve, we provide a true home for residents.  We invite you to schedule a tour to see firsthand our exceptional independent living, assisted living and memory care.
