Now that the cold weather season is
here, caregivers and family members need to know that very frigid temperatures
can be especially dangerous for those with Alzheimer’s
disease or other forms of dementia. One of the problems is that someone suffering
from dementia may not acknowledge their distress and/or may not understand how to
get help. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of
America offers advice to help family members and caregivers keep someone with
Alzheimer’s safe.
To start with, they recommend everyone
learn the signs of hypothermia, which include shivering, exhaustion,
sleepiness, slurred speech, memory loss and clumsy motor skills. Additionally, they explain space heaters may
not be a good idea around a person with dementia as they can be easily tipped
over and become a fire hazard. If you
need to use one, make sure it is has the safety feature of turning off when
tipped over. It is also suggested you do
use an electric blanket to keep the person warm as they may be burned without
noticing it.
Another problem is some Alzheimer’s
and dementia sufferers have a tendency to wander, which can be especially
dangerous during extremely cold temperatures.
Icy conditions and snow covered walkways present another hazard to
seniors and those with dementia are even more prone to falls.
